Making Community Connections

I’m introducing Todd Nilson, President of Clocktower Advisers, in today’s episode. He’s been working in online communities and digital workspaces for most of his professional career, and his earliest experience was facilitating discussion in forums for multi-player games.

Throughout his career, Todd has collaborated with numerous companies, guiding them to devise effective strategies for their online communities. His success stories are a testament to his expertise and can be a great source of inspiration for those looking to build their successful online platforms. He helps clients focus on aligning community and business goals by assisting leaders in understanding the factors that have the biggest influence on building a successful online platform.

Todd led transformational community collaborative technology projects for brands such as Activision, Facebook, Truth Initiative, etc. You can check out his free resources on his website

Making Community Connections Show Notes

5:03: Todd starts by giving a background on his various careers, which all involve making connections with people and building communities.

13:03: Discussing the value of making connections, Todd says a key is being unafraid to put himself out there to connect and reconnect with people. Part of it is connecting with others outside yourself and seeing ideas take fire.

20:45: “You have that moment where people catch fire with an idea, and that, for me, is the joy of doing this kind of work. Because when it happens, you’re on top of the world.”

23:52: Deb and Todd discuss balancing community and consulting work. He steps into his community when needed but generally doesn’t do day-to-day tasks because they are project-based.

30:14: Todd touches on a key to prioritization: You can’t do everything simultaneously. Also, the downside of automation is that it removes some of the vital personal connections.

31:31: “We can’t master every channel at once. We can’t do everything at once. Go deep on one thing, get good at one thing, and then expand from there.”

43:57: Todd closes with the most significant lesson learned to help his career: the more you connect to inner desires and beliefs, the better starting point for designing a community to get off the ground.
