Since launching an online community in 2020, I had a plan and a strategy, but it failed. My plan was built based on other people’s community strategy – it went like this:

Design a website.

Offer unique live experiences.

Invite members into a paid community.
-
The community only opens for a few days to incentivize people to join immediately.

The community closes for six months to give the members a cohort experience.
I thought I had done everything right. The creator community leaders I followed seemed to have all the answers, so I did exactly what my mentors had done. Why didn’t I see the same results? Upon reflection, I realized a crucial oversight in my initial strategy had yet to personalize it to suit my ideal member.
My “Big Purpose” was to bring everyone together to help them find calm in daily life. Because this message didn’t resonate with one ideal person, I didn’t convert anyone into a paid program. Today, I understand the importance of identifying your ideal member before creating an online community. This knowledge can save you from investing time, money, and energy into a venture that may not resonate with your target audience.
Do you need help with engagement, growth, or managing a group, course, or membership? Knowing what to do to encourage members to participate can be impossible. If they are participating, then what? How are you helping them solve their problems? What are they getting out of this group? When considering a community or membership, consider each member’s journey from discovering your community to becoming active.
