Onboarding Automation for Course Creators
that scale your community with Drew Dillon

In this episode of the Community Strategy PodcastDrew Dillon, CEO of Burb, shares insights about onboarding members into a cohort or course using their software as a service (SaaS).

An early employee at Yammer, Drew built communities inside companies, where he developed skills and insights that helped him understand how people gather. Burb’s software makes it easy for creators and course builders to build an automated onboarding process to keep members from Circle, Slack, or Discord engaged as they progress through a course or program.

For those interested, Drew is offering listeners of this podcast an opportunity to speak directly with an expert on the community operations team during a 1-hour free consultation call to understand if the software is a good fit for your online community. Show Notes

1:34 Drew shares how he started in the community industry as one of the first hires at Yammer (a tool that connects internal company individuals). He learned how to build relationships within an organization, and an exciting trend he discovered is Creators who’ve been teaching valuable content on YouTube.

5:03 Drew talks about his experience with the peak pandemic when he noticed the need to upskill and learn new skills for jobs. The fastest way to learn something is with other people. The name of Burb is based on the concept of small cities or towns, and he believes that grassroots local communities offer some great opportunities for connection.

7:21 “We’ve seen that the missing piece is the how that produces the result for the member.” Drew said. He says he wanted to make it easier for more brands to succeed, which is where Burb comes in.

9:54 When onboarding new members, Drew suggests that the first step in the process should be asking members to introduce themselves. By just providing a great onboarding, you’ll receive positive feedback.

13:16 Deb and Drew talk about the real-world experience of time limitations for each of us. Giving students the ability to decide if this isn’t the right time or if they don’t have time in their schedule and offering an opportunity to shift to a new cohort will provide a fantastic experience for that student.

17:55 JazzJune offers quizzes, and Deb shares about how to use certifications to honor the individual who spent time doing something that provides a bit of congratulation to them, which offers encouragement.

24:43 Drew shares his thoughts on data and marketing and how to measure leads. The need for attribution is where the CFO is challenged. We didn’t focus initially on the brand because we wanted to concentrate on community-first-focused companies. That led us to memberships and courses, Drew says.

27:30 A case study Drew shares gives insights into how the organization increased the implementation of the program participants.

29:54 The exciting thing for Burb is creators who are continuing to build courses, and he shares that it has been a “buzzword,” but that will continue in 2023.
