Avoid Burnout with this Community Leaders Wellness Webinar

Welcome back to the Community Strategy Podcast!

Leading an online community can feel overwhelming and daunting, especially in the face of ongoing challenges. From clarifying your community concept to defining your ideal member and launching a new group, it can be challenging to find time for reflection.

Over the past few years, I’ve learned that trying to take on too much leads to burnout and feelings of failure. Every community leader I’ve worked with has struggled with when the right time to pause is.

Boxed Community is committed to helping your wellbeing to ensure sustainable success later.
Community offerings include courses, coaching, and membership for leaders to connect during wellness activities.

Nicole helps leaders grow, improve their wellbeing, and develop an entrepreneurial spirit through one-on-one and group coaching. As a wanderlust and visual artist, she infuses her programs with diverse experiences, creating engaging and empowering experiences.

Show Notes

4:02 Nicole shares that she uses the Pomodoro Technique to boost her time management and optimize her community-building tasks.

This method involves focused work during 25-minute intervals with five-minute breaks. After four sprints, take a more extended break. You can also take longer intervals (45 minutes with a 15-minute break). Customize this for your lifestyle.

6:02 Nicole says it’s okay to say no. It is a great way to communicate your needs, and if you need something, say no. This helps you communicate boundaries. Don’t take on additional projects just because someone asks you to; saying no will help you set boundaries when they aren’t being respected. Do things that help you create rituals for disconnection: do a digital detox, walk outside, paint, or meditate.

8:20 Micro adventures can be a great way to escape the daily grind of managing an online community. Take an extra day off when attending a conference, book a hotel, relax, or explore a new city.

10:20 Connecting with those who understand your challenges, like Community Builders with Purpose, which you can join for free! Asking for help is one of the best ways to move through challenges with others. Share your questions inside this community and connect with fellow community builders.

18:10 Burnout symptoms include emotional shifts, physical manifestations, and behavioral changes. Feelings of hopelessness, a foggy mind, or irritability are sure signs that you are experiencing burnout. Once you feel these, you’ll need to address them immediately.

Having a routine helps create consistent and stackable healthy habits. Rethink your relationship with work – embrace “flow” over hours, challenge the hustle culture, and craft your ideal workday.

23:48 Practice gratitude, being present, and finding meaning in your work. If you aren’t finding meaning, stop and evaluate your work. Find what works for you. Deb shares that self-care is so important for community leaders. Designating your workday with boundaries, focus, and goals is a good starting point.

26:43 When leaders take self-care seriously, they can be better leaders for their members. Starting your own business is the most complicated job and a long-term project—think ten years.
