Community Structures that engage members
in an online community with Allegra Stein

On this episode of the Community Strategy Podcast, Allegra Stein joins the Find Calm Here Community Members to discuss aligning strengths with a community strategy.

Allegra is a YouMap® Certified Coach who leads Misfits to Maverick, an online mentorship community for coaches who want to start taking superficial, creative, and transformative steps forward in their coaching practice.

In this episode, you’ll learn about Allegra’s journey as a coach and leader of a coaching program. She will also share thoughts on community leaders’ challenges and whether our passion needs to lead to profits.

Show Notes

4:22 Allegra wanted to give more people access to her program, which is why she opened Misfit to Maverick, a community for coaches looking for connection and permission to do things differently than the “coaching industry.” She also saw the community as an experiment.

5:02 A friend told Allegra about YouMap®, a collaboration of 4 assessments in one, and she says what’s cool is it allows the participant to take a holistic approach. It helps put words to a person’s experiences.

8:11 Allegra’s top strengths: Relator, Activator, Ideator, Maximizer, and Adaptability. She has realized that she wants to relate to the others in the room, and when running a community to build membership, she is always aware of the engagement of her members.

12:17 “I would be their (members) faces, and I wanted to have relationships with people, and if they aren’t engaging in some way, it felt like the shadow side of being a realtor.” Allegra shares that the lack of engagement challenged her experiences with her members and her perspectives, thoughts, and feelings about the community.

14:43 Deb shares that it takes 6-9 months for members in an online community to feel safe unless it is expedited when being able to activate members more consistently. As hosts see challenges, it is hard to know why members aren’t inactive or disengaged.

18:12 Allegra repeatedly mentions the key strategy that helped her build engagement, which she repeated: Give, Ask, and Share. Allegra said she noticed two moments of selling as a community host. The first is to sell a member on joining the community, and the second is to sell them on “what’s in it for them.”

27:58 “It isn’t right if this feels like something on your to-do list. I want it to feel useful; I don’t want it to feel like it takes time.”

28:21 Missy mentioned that the habit of social media is stronger than the habit of getting inspired and motivating people to open community apps.

34:40 Deb and Allegra talk about shifting back to enjoying leading an online community. Deb’s strengths are restorative, communication, winning others over, positivity, and futuristic. The strengths have prompted Deb to realign with the direction that she’s going with her business, community, and podcast.

39:22 Deb and Allegra talk about aligning needs, interests, and experiences. Allegra shares the difference between being a coach and running a coaching program. Sometimes, the love for the work might mean stepping away from the business of selling, marketing, and sales, which are separate skill sets and jobs.

46:03 The difference between a community host, leader, and manager can be defined by explaining that the host sets the vision, the leader helps with the structure, and the manager helps implement the community strategy.
