Community is essential

Community Leadership (1)

When I’m speaking with a client I ask them “Who is this community for?” I usually hear a pretty broad answer.

  • “Young leaders who want a mentor”

  • “People who like to do..”

  • “Business owners and entrepreneurs who…”

Usually, this isn’t enough to convince a potential member to join your community.

People need to know why you are unique. What’s the “thing” you do differently?

Recently I listened to a podcast about the true meaning and purpose of community. What I heard was so relatable to online community building with clients that I’ve worked with and continue to support with resources.

No matter what kind of community you are building, you might find solace in We Can Do Hard Things with Glennon Doyle, author of UNTAMED; her wife Abby Wambach; and her sister Amanda Doyle.

The recent podcast I listened to titled: LIVE from Mexico with Brandi and Catherine Carlile shares honestly what it takes to build community, face adversity, and share with grace.

I thought it would be a wonderful podcast to share as we step into spring. The warmer air and longer days bring thoughts of gathering together.

If you are running a retreat, gathering friends for a party, or celebrating your online community success (or something else) you will enjoy this podcast.

Excerpt:

33:35: Glennon asks: What does community mean to you? How do you make decisions about how you do it? I have never met anyone who does a community like you two. (Brandi and Catherine Carlile)

37:15: Catherine says: “Community is essential. I don’t believe people are meant to be alone – that doesn’t mean you have to be in a relationship. It doesn’t mean you have to be with your dysfunctional family; if that’s toxic for you. It just means you cannot become isolated and disenfranchised; you have to find your people so that you have support and spiritual alignment with your fellow human beings. It helps you reflect who you are back to you.”

When everyone is offering a community, how do you know where to invest your time, money, and energy? I’d love to hear your answer. It’s something I ask every client to consider — where do you enjoy spending time?

P.S. The FindCalmHere.com website is back online after some months of tech issues. Yay! With that being said, I’m still working on the mobile version view, so it’s best when you are on a desktop or laptop.

P.P.S. I haven’t shared much about my new role, or what it is I actually am doing now that I’m working full time. If you’d like to hear more about the community I’m building with Indacloud, let me know!
